Make your next vacation special—sometimes, it’s all about where you rest your head.

In This Travel Article You Will Discover:

  • The Importance of a Good Hotel
  • 3 of the Best Around the World
  • Why “Best” Doesn’t Mean “Most Expensive”

I believe the right accommodation will make or break your vacation.

Sometimes, the “right” accommodation is all about location—a cabin in the woods, or even a tent.

But more often, it has the right mix of location, character, amenities, comfort, friendliness and… well… affordability.

I just don’t understand using a booking website that won’t even tell you what hotel you’re reserving. (I won’t name names, but it rhymes with “Notfire.”)

I’m willing to shell out a little extra to be sure I’m staying in the right area, and in a hotel that’s pleasant to return to at the end of a long day.

Yeah… I recall the days when any old cheap hostel would do…

But honestly, as I’ve gotten older—wiser—I’ve realized that comfortable accommodation does not take away from adventure.

However, the “right” accommodation varies depending on the style of trip.

People often ask me: “Dave, what are some of your favourite hotels?”

I don’t pull any punches.

Do you wanna know, too? Because I have MANY.

So I’ll start with three, organized by categories that are important to me:

Most Character: Naila Bagh Palace, Jaipur, India

Why I loved it: So much CHARACTER! It was like staying at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, but for real. Plus, it’s within walking distance of the Pink City.

What you should know: It’s a little rough around the edges in places. A “palace?” Ummm…

Best View: Il Borgo di Campi, Riomaggiore, Italy

Why I loved it: The views over the Mediterranean are absolutely second-to-none, and the onsite restaurant is one of the best in the region.

What you should know: Not all rooms have views—but all have either patios or adjacent lawns to enjoy the vista. Plus, you need a vehicle to get to town. And STAIRS.

Coziest: BriMar Bed & Breakfast, Tofino, Canada

Why I loved it: Ideal waterfront location on South Chesterman Beach, steps from surfing and beach-walks. Tasty breakfast; friendly hosts.

What you should know: It’s away from town, so having a vehicle is helpful. Only three rooms, so it can book up quickly. (Try to get the room with the clawfoot tub.)

OK—that’s my quick list. Enjoy, and remember—take time when booking your hotel. Your vacation may depend on it!
